Glendale: Home of Baskin Robbins

Baskin Robbins was founded in 1945 in Glendale, California.

Two American brothers-in-law, Burt Baskin and Irv Robbins, decided to merge their ice cream parlors to make one delicious company.

Irv had already been in the business for a while, having managed a counter in his father’s ice cream shop as a teen. Burt learned how to make ice cream while he was in the military during the war.

Together they decided on the now iconic 31 flavors.

Origin of Baskin Robbins

Origin of Baskin Robbins

Baskin Robbins is named after its founders, Burt Barkin and Irv Robbins.

Their original 31 flavors were made up of the 21 Irv had in his Snowbird Ice Cream shop plus 10 additional ones upon combining their businesses.

The idea behind the 31 flavors was to have one for each day of the month. This particular marketing ploy still makes Baskin Robbins unique today, though the 31 in their logo is purely symbolic now. Baskin Robbins offer a lot more flavors now.

How Many Flavors Baskin Robbins Have

When you consider that Baskin Robbins originally only had 31 flavors, the current number is a little more staggering. Since its inception, Baskin Robbins have created a whopping 1,400 flavors of ice cream.

We’ll cover some of the best ones further down in this article. Needless to say there’s probably nobody who has ever tried every single one of Baskin Robbins’ flavors. Besides which, you’d need about four years to do so if you could get a hold of them all.

The Best Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Flavors You Need to Try

The Best Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Flavors You Need to Try

With 1,400 ice cream flavors to try at one point or the other, it’s not easy to choose the best ones. Below is an attempt at collating some of the most classic and unusual flavors you’ll want to try.

What’s especially good about Baskin Robbins is that there truly is a flavor for everyone. But don’t take our word for it, see for yourself.

Caramel Macchiato

Baskin Robbins has a few coffee-based ice creams, including the popular Oreo N’ Cold Brew and Jamoca, Jamoca Almond Fudge. This, however, is the ultimate one. It’s made up of delicious milky coffee ice cream, which is studded with swirls of caramel sauce and flakes of espresso.

It’s the perfect treat to try in our Baskin Robbins milkshake recipe below. Or just enjoy the entire tub and make that milkshake another time; it’s up to you.

Mom’s Makin’ Cookies

This ice cream flavor is one of Baskin Robbins’ most clever inventions to date. The base is a creamy brown sugar ice cream. This is swirled up with a mix of cookie dough batter, chocolate chip cookie pieces, and sumptuous chocolate chips.

It’s like the best cookie dough ice cream you’ve ever had, except better. Try it on its own or as part of a yummy milkshake.

Icing on the Cake

If you like cookie dough ice cream, this is even better. This flavor of ice cream is based on cake batter. It’s delicious, creamy, and full of cake chunks and bits of frosting. There’s a candy confetti ribbon laced throughout and it tastes like… well, a funfetti birthday cake.

It’s really good on its own or as part of a sundae-style dessert alongside a warm brownie. If you can wait long enough to eat it, that is.

Cherries Jubilee

Cherries Jubilee is a modern take on one of the original 31 flavors — Burgundy Cherry. This cherry-flavored ice cream is filled with cherry pieces and a little hint of rum flavoring. It’s great in an ice cream sandwich or served on its own.

If you love cherry flavor, you’ll also really enjoy this one as part of a refreshing milkshake. It’s one of those year-round flavors that’s just as good in summer as it is in winter when you might want to add an extra dash of rum.

Gold Medal Ribbon

This flavor was first created in 1979, in honor of the then upcoming Olympic Games. It’s a pretty simple vanilla and chocolate ice cream with decadent swirls of caramel laced throughout it.

This one’s really good as part of an ice cream sandwich or on a warm brownie. If you love caramel you may want to top it with an extra squirt of sweet caramel sauce, too.

German Chocolate Cake

Did we mention that Baskin Robbins come up with some unusual flavors? German Chocolate Cake is one of them. It starts with decadent chocolate ice cream, which is chock-full of coconut flakes, brownie pieces, and chopped walnuts.

Traditional German Chocolate Cake (the American version) contains pecans instead of walnuts, but we’re not complaining.

Old Fashioned Butter Pecan

This ice cream flavor actually originated in the 1800s. It’s butter pecan flavored ice cream that’s studded with chunks of butter-roasted pecans. It’s delicious on its own, but especially good when you add a big swirl of caramel sauce on top.

You may want to try this one on top of a warm waffle as well, with extra chunks of roasted pecans on top. Delicious.

They have built up a reputation for being one of the greatest ice cream brands around. Below are just some of the reasons why they’re still going strong today.

Variety of Flavors and the 31 Flavor Concept

Baskin Robbins boast around 1,400 flavor inventions, but it all started with their unique 31 flavor concept. The idea behind this was that you could have a different ice cream flavor each day of the month. It’s a clever marketing trick and one that’s completely Baskin Robbins.

With that said, if you wanted to try the full 1,400 flavors — though not all are currently in circulation anymore — you’d need a grand total of four years.

Lots of Options for Dietary Restrictions

Baskin Robbins offer plenty of choices for those with dietary restrictions or food intolerances. There are vegan options, dairy free varieties, and even gluten conscious ones. The latter are technically gluten free but marked as requiring caution as they’re not produced in a totally gluten free environment.

You can also get sugar free ice cream flavors, frozen yogurts, and sorbets. So as you can see, there is truly something for everyone, which is a great perk of buying Baskin Robbin ice cream.

Ice Cream… with Vitamins

While Baskin Robbins ice cream is by no means a health food, it does have some health benefits. Baskin Robbins ice cream contains calcium, phosphorus, Vitamin A, Vitamin B12, Vitamin K, and Vitamin D amongst others.

Having these vitamins in your diet will help strengthen your bones as well as your mood. With that said, standard Baskin Robbins is fairly sugary, so you’ll still want to enjoy it in moderation.

Delicious Baskin Robbins Flavor Hacks and Recipes

Delicious Baskin Robbins Flavor Hacks and Recipes

Baskin Robbins ice cream is naturally delicious on its own, straight from a tub or in a cone from your local shop. With that said, you may wish to try your favorite flavor in a slightly different way.

We’ve collected some of the best flavor hacks and recipes for your ultimate Baskin Robbins ice cream experience at home.

Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Sundae

What’s better than ice cream on its own? Ice cream paired with a warm brownie and chocolate sauce, of course. To make this fun dessert, you’ll want to either bake a batch of brownies or get your favorite store bought variety.

We like Ghirardelli’s Dark Chocolate Premium Brownie Mix for the best of both worlds — just whip up this box mix and bake it for fresh-from-the-oven brownie goodness. Add some Baskin Robbins ice cream and chocolate fudge sauce and enjoy. The Icing on the Cake is virtually made for sundaes.

Baskin Robbins Milkshake

Baskin Robbins ice cream is ideal for milkshakes. Simply pick your favorite flavor and blend with your choice of milk. Dairy-free alternatives such as oat or almond milks work just as well as regular cow’s milk. Caramel Macchiato is a great flavor to blend into an iced coffee-style milkshake.

Any of them are great though, and you’ll want to experiment with what flavor works best for your homemade milkshakes.

Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Sandwich

Ice cream sandwiches are easy to make yet super fun. Try baking your own chocolate chip cookies. Keep them slightly warm and add a scoop of softened ice cream between two cookies. Squish them together to create the sandwich — done.

These are especially great served at kids parties. Serve with a glass of milk for a delicious, vintage treat.

Fun fact: ice cream sandwiches were first popularized in America in the late 1800s. Why not serve your sandwiches with one of the original flavors, such as Burgundy Cherry (now Cherries Jubilee) for a truly old-fashioned treat?

Best Baskin Robbins Alternatives

If you can’t get Baskin Robbins, don’t despair. There are plenty of alternatives you may want to try. Below are a couple of our favorite options for ice cream. These are all a little different, but well worth a try.

Be forewarned though: true Baskin Robbins fans will always come back to their favorites, regardless of how good the alternatives may be.

Ben & Jerry’s

Ben & Jerry’s are famous for their ethics-based marketing. If you like their campaigns, you may well wish to support them by getting some of their delicious ice cream flavors.

Ben & Jerry’s are also similarly inventive when it comes to their ice cream creations. Their Cores ice cream pints are particularly good, as are the cookie dough chunks.

Magnum

Magnum ice cream is another great alternative to Baskin Robbins. Their tubs offer delicious flavors, though they’re better known for their ice cream bars. Magnum is readily available in most supermarkets.

They offer plenty of different flavors, though there is obviously much less variety than you’ll get with Baskin Robbins flavors.

Dairy Queen

Dairy Queen’s Blizzard Treats are another great alternative to Baskin Robbins. These soft serve ice creams are creamy and delicious. They offer lots of different flavors, including Cake Batter Cookie Dough and Oreo.

There are classic treats as well as newer versions, including their unique Royal treats. These contain a topping-style ice center in the middle of the ice cream.
