French Word A Week – Pamplemousse & A Giveaway

Grapefruit

Planning this edition of French Word a Week was a complete "house" collaboration this time around. My dad picked the word, my mom got tickled pink when I got her involved into styling the picture. What did B. do? What he does best: ate the props! A little family project is always a fun when there is French and English simultaneously flying around. I just watch and take it all in.

I admit I drew a blank when picking this week’s word (too many options I guess) until I stripped it down to the bare essential of something we see or eat daily. It has to be grapefruit for us. My dad eats half a grapefruit daily, B. drinks a glass every morning and I nosh on grapefruit sections in the afternoon for a little vitamin pick-me-up. Mom? She buys them. By the crate. Especially when we are all together!

Grapefruit

Today’s word, pamplemousse, makes me think of plump, ample, soft, sunshine. It’s one of those words I love to hear B. say outloud. It makes me giggle. You can listen to the pronunciation here.

Thanks to my mom I recently discovered the artist Catherine Martini who dedicates her work to painting all sorts of sweet things. I love the burst of colors, the shapes and subjects she choses to illustrate. Visiting her site always brings in some sunshine in the house. I wanted to share her work with you and thought a giveaway would be fun.

Catherine Martini's Card Set

But…it’s not all. I am throwing in a copy of "Unforgettable Desserts" by Dede Wilson which contains 140 thorough recipes for desserts you can make all year round. The handful of recipes I made from it were a hit with everyone so I am confident you will find something tasty in it also.

To enter to receive a set of 3 cards from Catherine Martini and "Unforgettable Desserts": leave a comment on this post (one entry per person) between Friday March 26th 2010 and Monday March 29th, 11pm (US Eastern time). Anyone can enter, I’ll ship worldwide.

We will be out of town this weekend and since I moderate the comments manually, bear with me if you don’t see yours appear right away.

Have a great weekend!

That word is making me laugh, too. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Those cards are stunning – I want to eat them, that is how good they look!

Robin (Hippo Flambe) March 26, 2010 um 2:56 pm

My father believes pamplemousse appears on dessert menus to fool non french speaking diners. It sounds so fanciful.

I've recently fallen in love with grapefruit. your photos of them are gorgeous and making me hungry ๐Ÿ™‚

Evelyn March 26, 2010 um 3:01 pm

Bravo! Pamplemousse est magnifique!

Though my French is very limited, pamplemousse is one of my favorite words to pronounce AND eat. That's a win-win! What a fun project ๐Ÿ™‚

Rhea March 26, 2010 um 3:01 pm

i totally giggled at the "pamplemousse" pronunciation and i love that you can download it as an mp3. the cards are fantastic as well, especially les macarons (which are great in any form, even on paper!)

Melissa March 26, 2010 um 3:02 pm

I'm so hungry right now just by looking at those cards! =D

Bronwyn March 26, 2010 um 3:02 pm

YUM! I adore grapefruit, in fact I am just about to eat a vanilla cupcake with grapefruit ginger buttercream frosting!

Kelley March 26, 2010 um 3:02 pm

Hehe, funnily enough, pamplemousse is one French word that will forever stick out in my mind. When I went to French pastry school, one of my classmates would bring fresh "pamplemousse" from his trees for our instructor because it was his favorite fruit. ๐Ÿ™‚

Beverly Lynn March 26, 2010 um 3:03 pm

Grapefruit season always makes me happy! I love getting a huge bag. My hubby and I will go through them in a snap.

Nads' Bakery March 26, 2010 um 3:03 pm

I absolutely love your blog!

Unknown March 26, 2010 um 3:05 pm

Pamplemousse is also the name of a wonderful San Diego-area restaurant. –Likely what locals here think of when they hear this French word!

Lindsay March 26, 2010 um 3:05 pm

Though I'm not as fond of grapefruit as your faimly is, I have always loved saying the pamplemousse. It is just fun to say!

Mookleberry March 26, 2010 um 3:05 pm

those are awesome pictures, and it's a great word… it makes me laugh too when I hear it haha

snackpig March 26, 2010 um 3:05 pm

My boyfriend is the fastest grapefruit eater I've ever seen. I am the type that carefully pulls out each section to arrange on a plate for snacking through out the day. He on the other hand manages to scarf down the entire thing with no tools except his fingers. I've secretly been timing him, and lately, his speeds are somewhere in the 2 to 3 minute zone for a large grapefruit.

Lisa March 26, 2010 um 3:08 pm

I've always loved that word– it evokes the color of a grapefruit so much better than "grapefruit." The word SOUNDS pink!

Sara March 26, 2010 um 3:08 pm

Wow, what adorable cards! Your grapefruit photos are absolutely gorgeous!

JessicaFG March 26, 2010 um 3:09 pm

Love the word a week feature – taking me back to the days when I studied French in school and was much more well versed. I always loved pamplemousse as well!

Romy March 26, 2010 um 3:09 pm

Heather March 26, 2010 um 3:09 pm

Grapefruit is one of my favorites too.

HP March 26, 2010 um 3:09 pm

I was not a great fan of grapefruit, until my mother showed me how to buy the ones that are ripe, not just pretty. Now, I am trying to make ice cream out of it, it's a challenge!

Unknown March 26, 2010 um 3:09 pm

"unforgettable Desserts" has been on my "to buy" list since I saw it. Mousses and gelees are things I've never been passionate about making but would really like to try my hand at. I love your pamplemousse pictures!

Unknown March 26, 2010 um 3:09 pm

Les pamplemousses are my second favorite breakfast food. First place goes to yogurt, which is another wonderful word when you say it in French. "Yaourt." I love all those vowels together! ๐Ÿ™‚

abi porter March 26, 2010 um 3:09 pm

I eat grapefruits daily as well. Sometimes up to 3!

Stephanie @ La Dolce Vita March 26, 2010 um 3:11 pm

Have a wonderful weekend.
Best,
Stephanie

I love the word, I love the fruit and I love the look of those beautiful cards.

dani March 26, 2010 um 3:35 pm

Well now I am craving a grapefruit! Growing up I always shared them with my mother and grandmother at our ski cottage in New Hampshire – I used to eat them with a grapefruit spoon and leave lots of bits because I liked to squeeze out the juice and drink it!

how healthy of you all! ๐Ÿ™‚ Grapefruits always remind me of my grandparents ๐Ÿ™‚ we used to eat them by the halves anytime we spent time at their SW Florida home, and ALWAYS made our way back to Texas with several large paper sacks full of huge, plump Florida grapefruits ๐Ÿ™‚

Reena Newman March 26, 2010 um 3:54 pm

I have fond memories of grapefruits from my childhood. My grandfather used to eat one every morning and just to be silly we would wear swimming goggles so we wouldn't squirt juice in our eyes.

lauraelih March 26, 2010 um 3:56 pm

Such beautiful prints! I only took one year of French, didn't really think I had retained any of it until I was in a cafe in Paris with my sister attempting to choose drinks and snacks, and suddenly remembered: pampelmousse=grapefruit.

KJonas March 26, 2010 um 3:58 pm

Pamplemousse!

I would love a dessert book!

Excellent choice for word of the week, it put a big smile on my face. Looking forward to sharing with my eldest son who is in his 3rd year of French. I'm sure he'll get a kick out of my pronunciation.

Have a great weekend!

pastrywitch March 26, 2010 um 5:03 pm

The word is fun, but the tease about the gluten free puff pastry is much more exciting. I just found out I'm gluten intolerant, so I am really looking forward to the recipe.

Carrie March 26, 2010 um 5:03 pm

The card makes me want to make some macarons. They are the prettiest cookie!

Dolce March 26, 2010 um 5:03 pm

I am not a grapefruit fan… But some words are definitely fun hearing… Like "cucurbitacรฉ", said by an american, is to laugh out loud for!

Ari March 26, 2010 um 5:13 pm

Pamplemousse has actually been one of my favorite french words since I learned it back in 7th or 8th grades. So fun!

Audra March 26, 2010 um 5:16 pm

How beautiful those cards are! I'm heading to her site right now. Thanks ~

christine p March 26, 2010 um 5:16 pm

I love grapefruits but my teeth are too sensitive to enjoy them too frequently. I usually like to use a small spoon to scoop out the fruit from my grapefruit half..and drink the juice that's made in the process from my 'bowl'. ๐Ÿ™‚

rick @ alamode March 26, 2010 um 5:18 pm

enlightening, both the word and the beautiful images! i do keep picturing a fluffy dessert ๐Ÿ™‚

Kim March 26, 2010 um 5:19 pm

I love grapefruit! An amazing name like pamplemousse only makes it better!

Up here in Canada we have the French printed on all of our food packaging along with the English. I didn't realize this when I was young however, and couldn't understand why anyone would drink "raisin" juice …

Angie March 26, 2010 um 5:20 pm

Love the book and the cards are beautiful. Who knew the word was pronounced that way? Made me laugh.
Thanks.

Sindy SGP March 26, 2010 um 6:41 pm

Hope you had a lovely trip, and not too overwhelmed by all the postings.
I spotted your swirly turquiose macaron months back. I have to say they really look like works of art. I was on the topic of macarons with my mum, it made me thought of you and your macarons. That's why I'm back for a visual treat. It's really hard to find good comercially-available macarons in Singapore.

Nisha Krishnan March 26, 2010 um 6:46 pm

such a bouncy word. i remember a book called Madam Pamplemousse and her edible adventures (i think) for kids to introduce them to foodie delights.

Anonymous March 26, 2010 um 7:42 pm

Too cute!

Naomi March 26, 2010 um 7:52 pm

Pamplemousse! I've been saying this word a lot today too. When I was a kid our neighbor would always come over with large bags filled with grapefruits. We'd eat them cut in half, with a spoon.

Heather Sabra March 26, 2010 um 7:52 pm

Helen,

Nice giveawys :)) Have a nice weekend!

Unknown March 26, 2010 um 8:03 pm

Awesome word choice. Speaking no French, its pronunciation continually surprises me.

Pamela March 26, 2010 um 8:06 pm

Not only is pamplemousse one of the most wonderful sounding words, but the colour of ruby grapefruit is just perfection. When I was 10 we spent the summer at my grandmother's house and I was introduced to pamplemousse crystalisee. I'm not sure I would have even tasted it then – never mind loved it! – had I known what fruit it was in English. Thank heavens our tastebuds continue to develop as we grow up. And Macarons! They are everywhere I look at the moment. They seem to be following me, begging to be made. Soon, I will make them, as the memory of eating them on a sunny day in Rouen last Ausgust everytime I see a picture practically has me drooling.

Anne March 26, 2010 um 8:09 pm

That's a lovely giveaway!

NecessaryForce March 26, 2010 um 8:09 pm

Pearls N the Hood March 26, 2010 um 8:24 pm

How funny! My favorite flavored Perrier is the Pamplemousse Rose and my bf always makes fun of me and says pamplemousee in a BAD French accent!

Bunnee March 26, 2010 um 8:31 pm

I love grapefruit but am not supposed to eat it because of meds I take. Sometimes I do anyway – I love the tart flavor. Your pictures do it justice!

Elizabeth March 26, 2010 um 8:31 pm

My daughter and I share a grapefruit in the morning. I cut it in half and carefully cut around the sections and we eat it, one half each, with small spoons, slurping the juice out of it's "cup" at the end.

Reya March 26, 2010 um 8:40 pm

Pamplemousse! Pamplemousse, pamplemousse, pamplemousse. Wow, that is really fun to say!

innBrooklyn March 26, 2010 um 9:41 pm

I've always loved the word pamplemousse — for some reasons it conjures visions of a big red mythical beast with a hump and wings. I guess the color is for the grapefruit. the beast, probably because i think of moose. seems crazy but i never forgot the word when I wanted my citrus for breakfast in paris!

as always your photos are gorgeous!

I once lived in an apartment which was built in an old cirtus grove.

Outside my second floor balcony was a lovley pink grapefruit tree.
Free and instantly available fresh pamplemousse. It was a delight!
Also. . . so deliciously fragrant when the tree was in bloom.

What a treat it would be to win this give away. Your blog is my favorite food blog to visit.

Unknown March 27, 2010 um 12:49 am

I'm a grapefruit lover myself. I remember waking up in the early hours of the morning when I stayed at my grandparent's house as a child and splitting a grapefruit with my grandpa. I'd cover mine in a mountain of sugar, and he'd eat his plain. Reminds me of good times.

I'd really love that book… I can never try enough dessert recipes ๐Ÿ™‚

Mercรจ March 27, 2010 um 12:51 am

I come and go when it comes to grapefruit. I always love it but one month I'll eat it everyday and the next month I'll have it once or twice. I'm an irregular pamplemousse eater. I'd love to find a dessert to use it in. I guess that's my new search!

Unknown March 27, 2010 um 5:25 pm

S'il vous plaรฎt accepter mes remerciements pour votre site formidable, c'est vraiment merveilleux.

Pamplemousse! 'Tis a favorite between my daughter and I. We savor the flavor and the pronunciation. Hats off to the French for creating such a beautiful language that makes our lips pout so beautifully!

Unknown March 27, 2010 um 5:33 pm

just found your site while looking for pistachio dacquoise recipes. everything is so beautiful! and grapefruit is my favorite fruit! (how could i not leave a comment?)

Kikiree March 27, 2010 um 5:36 pm

Grapefruit is my favorite. We have an old grapefruit tree at our backyard. The blooming season is the most wonderful period where the scent of the blooms is in the air. If you ever come to visit Arizona, March is the time to enjoy the smell and some citrus! I would love to get the cards as well! Very lovely.

Unknown March 27, 2010 um 5:46 pm

French words are so romantic no matter what they mean. LOL.. I've been learning to cook from other countries.. and that cook book would be a wonderful addition to my studies!!

Anonymous March 27, 2010 um 6:04 pm

The cards are beautiful. I still need to try your recipe your grapefruit white tea jello someday, looks delicious.

I found Your blog few weeks ago while looking for recipe for cupcakes.

I didn't cook anything from recipes (yet), but I am sure it would be delicious just like photos. They are so colorfull, sharp and focus. Just perfect.

I just wanna say "Hi" from Poland. I will be Your often guest from now on.

Renee March 27, 2010 um 7:18 pm

Thanks to your mom for helping you discover Catherine's work! Its fantastic!!

Allison Day March 27, 2010 um 7:21 pm

Pamplemousse is such a fun word, and so cheery as well! Grapefruit always make me think of my grandparents – for years, the only time we would ever see grapefruit in the house was when my grandparents were over and would eat one for breakfast every morning, scooping the pink flesh out of the skin with one of those sharp spiky grapefruit spoons. ๐Ÿ™‚

Anonymous March 27, 2010 um 7:32 pm

Love it – I just made grapefruit tarts, bruleed and floating on the goat cheese mousse you featured in an earlier tart recipe.

Thanks for the inspiration – I love your blog.

sue @ postcards from paradise falls March 27, 2010 um 8:35 pm

For a very brief time, I was a French major in college. Hearing French words makes me smile and "pamplemousse" is so fun to say ๐Ÿ™‚

Unknown March 27, 2010 um 8:44 pm

Grapefruits remind me of my grandfather, who ate them with a sprinkle of salt. Still makes me pucker to think of it!

Unknown March 27, 2010 um 8:47 pm

I love the word Pamplemousse! When I was a student in France traveling with two French girls through France we stopped at a place on the autoroute. I really wanted to EAT the beautiful juicy pamplemousse I saw on the counter. The server explained to me over and over (and over)that I could not eat the pamplemousse but he would gladly make me a juice drink with pamplemousse. This went on for five minutes until I left without my pamplemousse. I didn't eat my pamplemousse that day but every time I hear the word pamplemousse I smile and remember a summer many years ago.

Unknown March 27, 2010 um 9:01 pm

I love the French word a week! I think it might motivate me to take some actual French lessons one of these days…

Karen@Mignardise March 27, 2010 um 9:20 pm

Pamplemousse has always been one of my favorite French words, along with cacahuete (sp?).

Beautiful photos!

Nataliect March 27, 2010 um 9:31 pm

Pamplemousse makes me think of Paris! It became my favourite word when I spent a weekend there a couple of years ago. It was also the flavour of the weekend – the amazing pamplemousse et poire tarts (this was before my celiac diagnosis), and even pampelmousse chewing gum (which was actually good, though I usually detest gum).
Everytime I see grapefruit, I think "PAMPLEMOUSSE" and giggle a little.
Between that and my recent excitement over the bananas being labelled "Golden Bananas", the guys at my local grocery store must think I'm nuts.

Shannon QUALLS March 27, 2010 um 9:36 pm

I love the artwork. Beautiful.

Bende, Zoรฉ or Abigรฉl March 27, 2010 um 9:41 pm

In our mulilingual family, we always drink "pamplemousse juice" because we like the way it rhymes!

Amanda March 27, 2010 um 9:54 pm

I really want to learn French, and since my sister knows it she teaches me random things, and pamplemousse happens to be one of them!
Can't say that I am a fan of it, but I've only had it once so I know I should try it again..

Nice stumbling upon your blog ๐Ÿ™‚

Linda Liu March 27, 2010 um 9:54 pm

What a lovely word for such a unique, beautiful fruit! Grapefruit is my 13 year old daughter's favorite and I can't wait to teach her the French word (which, not surprisingly, sounds so much more exotic and delicious than "grapefruit"!)

Rosanna Guillem March 27, 2010 um 11:06 pm

Like this project of a word a week, very instructive.
How I wish I could win this exquisite book you talk about!

Unknown March 27, 2010 um 11:10 pm

Thank you for the new word! I love grapefruit (toronja) soda from Mexico, and there's a bag of Texas Rio Reds in the back fridge. I can recommend pamplemousse with lemon vodka as a lovely summer drink.

Arlene Mobley March 27, 2010 um 11:18 pm

What gorgeous artwork and the cookbook sounds like one I would love to own.

arlene

Amanda March 27, 2010 um 11:37 pm

I love the french word a week. It helps me remember the french that I learned while I lived Grenoble. I remember seeing les pamplemousses in the market. I would get one now and again for my husband. I never did develop a taste for them. I prefer sweet over tart. Maybe that is why I love those dessert paintings.

Thank you for sharing.

Anonymous March 28, 2010 um 12:06 am

Tasty designs! I've been trying to brush up on my 11 years of French from almost 20 years ago

I recently moved to Quebec where my husband is from. So I love that you include a French word weekly as this helps in my learning of the language spoken here. I read the word AND it's pronunciation than say it out loud and wait for my husbands reaction. Thank's for such a wonderful blog!

Fran March 28, 2010 um 2:45 am

Oh my gosh, the pronunciation was nothing like I heard it in my head! And I thought I was such an refined, sophisticated woman. Ok, not so much.

And grapefruit seems to be in perfect form right now. I'm addicted and can't get enough this winter.

Beth March 28, 2010 um 2:55 am

I just made my first macarons this weekend for a wine and cheese party. I used a ganache filling and a raspberry mascarpone filling too. They were a hit with our guests, but they were far from perfect (more "skirty" than "feety").

VertAnge March 28, 2010 um 6:25 am

Pamplemousse sounds really funny. I read that French is the language that uses the same muscles in pronunciation that we use when we are smiling.

Unknown March 28, 2010 um 6:50 am

Great word of the day, it takes practice getting the word pronounced right but fun to say nonetheless.

Love the macarons!

I really want to try broiling grapefruit with some brown sugar. It sounds so delicious!

Learning French has never tasted so good. ;-P I love the macaron painting, their feet look so frilly it's almost like they're wearing little can can skirts! Love the photography on your blog, it makes me happy to see pretty food when I'm sad.

Bon appetit!

Liv March 28, 2010 um 10:39 am

hmmm…I have heard that 'pamplemousse' could assist in weight loss ๐Ÿ˜› Anyway, grapefruit is soooo juicy and sweet when it's ripe!
I love how your teaching awesome french words. When I was learning french, i had always learnt about grammar and boring stuff like that Don't get me wrong. Grammar is so important for french but I find that trying to remember all those conjugations and tenses were so tedious!! Anyway, grammar was all we basically learnt at school (as well as other things of course) but my teacher would NEVER have introduced me to awesome french words such as 'pamplemousse'!! J'adore le francais et la pamplemousse!

grapefruit sounds so nicely in French. I love them, though it is quite a recent love. In winter I like to grill them in oven with some honey and cinnamon on top – maybe not so healthy but so damn good:-)

Mikaela March 28, 2010 um 8:46 pm

Here's a fun fact: accoring to wikianswers,
grapefruit got it's name from "John Lunan, a botanist, who gave it that name in 1814 because the fruits grow in "grape-like" clusters."

Landliebe March 28, 2010 um 9:03 pm

When I was a child we slathered our grape fruit halves with white sugar! Now we just like them straigh up. I wonder if they have gotten sweeter or if our palates are just more sophisticated?

Melange a Trois March 28, 2010 um 11:02 pm

Mel March 29, 2010 um 5:12 am

Heeeey, I ate pamplemousse for breakfast for 2 years religiously, I couldn't bear waking up and not having one. I eat other things now, but i still remember how much I appreciated having put them in the fridge the night before, cold, juicy, bittersweet. Hugs, Helen!

Micaela March 29, 2010 um 1:20 pm

This was one of the hardest words to learn while I was studying French, because it is in no way related to how to say grapefruit in English or Spanish (pomelo), so it was hard to remember. But I love that it makes me think of purple mousse!

dinazad March 29, 2010 um 1:30 pm

Lovely pictures indeed – they made me realize I need to buy a grapefruit (or several. or a crateful) immediately!

Miranda March 29, 2010 um 1:36 pm

Those cards look so yummy!

I love "pamplemousse", but I think I love the word more than the fruit. It is one of my favorite word in French and I believe the sounds are describing the texture and the pulp so well…

Great idea with the French word introductions! I am glad you gave the pronunciation link. After 'internet era' I realized I pronounced so many European words incorrectly. Beautiful pictures and paintings too!

Pamplemousse sounds so cute! ๐Ÿ™‚ Have been watching this site for quite awhile now, but this is the first time I've ever commented. Thanks for all the wonderful pictures and recipes! My family eats lots of grapefruits too, it's a common fruit here in sunny Singapore.

I will never forget when I first fell in love with the word Pamplemousse……I had a delicious smelling facial moisturizer from the Yonka skin care line & it had Pamplemousse in the name. Loved that stuff!

Fun photo with the devoured grapefruit rind leftovers!

I love your pictures. They are so real. I would love to eat a grapefruit but can't as citrus makes my mouth and throat sore. I do love all of them and do suffer once in a while for that great taste. I really enjoy your blog.

Jennifer N. March 29, 2010 um 6:18 pm

I always loved the word pamplemousse when I studied French in high school and college. I thought it sounded much better than "grapefruit".

Rachelle March 29, 2010 um 6:18 pm

Grapefruit sounds so much more fun in French! I love using grapefruit in desserts… salads too! I agree those pictures are so adorable and colorful, and would look beautiful hanging in any kitchen.

Helene March 29, 2010 um 8:30 pm

Isabelle: it's not me speaking the word out loud. I am not sure I understand your question about potimarron though.

KW March 29, 2010 um 8:30 pm

I can't personally handle the bitterness of a raw grapefruit by itself, but your photos sure make them look tasty, like eating a bite of summer/spring.

I gotta agree with soft coeur, the fact that you can download the pronunciation of pamplemousse amuses me greatly

Cynthia March 29, 2010 um 8:32 pm

Your photographs are so beautiful.

Louise March 29, 2010 um 9:48 pm

Grapefruit translates to pamplemousse, a word which I already knew. I will keep an eye out for more of your french words which may be new to me.
When I think of pamplemouse, I think of our dessert chocolate fondues, with three seperate types of chocolate (dark, milk and white). Pink grapefruit dipped in white chocolate is the surprise taste combination that contrasts with the other choices and is a favorite.
Bon appetit!

chibiume March 29, 2010 um 9:48 pm

I've loved the word "pamplemousse" since I learned it in 8th grade French class — it just sounds so much more sunny and luxurious than "grapefruit"!

Kayla March 29, 2010 um 9:53 pm

Pamplemousse! One of my faves, too! I'd love to win this cookbook for my friend Debbie, who is a far better baker than I am, but who invites me over to eat the treats that she whips up. So this would be kind of a win-win situation. Thanks!

Joyeaux March 29, 2010 um 9:58 pm

What beautiful artwork! And, so colorful, you can't help but smile and feel happy looking at them. And, I think I might just have to buy some grapefruit this weekend. I haven't had one in ages, I love them warmed up with brown sugar sprinkled on top. Thank you for the giveaway.
