My Dog Ate My Homework!

This is semi-related baking post, and I apologize for the lack of treats today but I thought I would give you the reason why: let me introduce you to Tippy -aka Tip The Ferocious. This picture was actually taken the other night when he was playing it all cool with his toys and pretending to be the nicest, least troublesome dog around. He has calmed down from the days he would snatch steaks from our plate or devour an entire sheet pan of cookie cooling on the counter top. He has even stopped chewing up the house to bits and shreds when we leave him alone (crating him was brilliant, he loves it). Now and then, when we forget to crate him and leave in a hurry he will find his way inside the trashcan and scatter the contents across the kitchen, dining room and living room. Lo-ve-ly…..!!! The crown event however was when we found him all fours on the kitchen table eating from a box of chocolate. He had that look of "Maybe if I don’t move they won’t see me…" We thought that was the end of it until we found the bottle of Tums half chewed up. Smartie pants!!

Well, I went upstairs to set up my tripod and camera because the light was better there this morning and when I came back downstairs to pick up the pan of No-Knead-Caramel Sticky Buns, I first noticed that he was really busy trying to lick his snout clean and then doing his usual rubbing against a washcloth. Yes! My dog washes his face every time after he eats. Freaked me out the first time he did that but now it is a great conversation topic when guests see him do that!! Then I looked toward the stove where I had set the pan to cool….and the pan was upside down on the floor…emp-ty!

Now you know what I meant by "the dog ate my homework"…I’ll wait a couple more days to re bake them and post the whole recipe, maybe a complete different one on Monday. I was going to post a picture of Tippy post-bun fest but really right now he is not looking so pretty….He’s been chewing grass all afternoon…Smart dog: sugar then detox!!!

I’d love to hear your pet story if you have one, they always crack me up!!
Hope you are all enjoying your weekend!

Susan @ SGCC March 9, 2008 um 8:21 am

Uh oh! And he looks so sweet and innocent too! That is a priceless story. You are excused from turning in your homework today, but Tippy has detention! Lol!

Rachel@fairycakeheaven March 9, 2008 um 9:41 am

Oh no!!! One of our cats has a habit of "borrowing" food that she forgets to return, or so my husband claims in her defence!!! Lulling you into a false sense of security being all cute and then they do something like this………………

Rosa's Yummy Yums March 9, 2008 um 9:48 am

Hilarious, but not funny at all for you!!!! I bet you must have felt terribly desperate when you discovered that empty pan on the floor!

Cheers,

Rosa

Kelly-Jane March 9, 2008 um 10:14 am

What a scoundrel! – but a very cute one =)

Emily March 9, 2008 um 10:19 am

OH shucks! That’s funny.
My cat used to like to drink the leftover cereal milk in the bowl.

Cannelle Et Vanille March 9, 2008 um 10:47 am

That’s hilarious. I wish I could have seen his sugary face. Too cute!

Nupur March 9, 2008 um 10:59 am

How adorable is he?!

Anonymous March 9, 2008 um 12:46 pm

Oooooh, you must be wrong. He looks so innocent!

giz March 9, 2008 um 1:44 pm

I couldn’t stop laughing – I so feel your pain. I came home one night to find the dog with a cereal box on his head – caught red handed!!! You so want to kill them and it’s so hard to stay angry with them.

Anna March 9, 2008 um 2:12 pm

Ohhh nightmare… I think we’ll let you off XD.

I remember when we caught our dog poised on the kitchen table, tongue inches from the Christmas turkey. Not. Impressed.

MyKitchenInHalfCups March 9, 2008 um 3:14 pm

Sugar then detox! Our golden retriever would eat anything and everything . . . except garlic cloves! Those he would spit out.
On the other hand the cocker that I grew up with was so well trained we three kids could leave our dinner plates on the floor, go into the next room, come back five minutes later and the dog was the requisite 12 inches from the plate . . . untouched. Children are great dog trainer!
Sweet pup you have.

breadchick March 9, 2008 um 3:26 pm

Oh that Tippy…

Cakebrain March 9, 2008 um 5:31 pm

My American Eskimo was just a cute little pup when she gobbled up a whole solid chocolate Santa Claus I had left on the coffee table. It was well wrapped and I couldn’t figure out how she was able to unwrap it so quickly. I was so worried because they say that chocolate is toxic for dogs; but she didn’t seem sick at all and had a big grin on her face!

Dana March 9, 2008 um 6:20 pm

OMG! I can’t believe your dog did that! When I was little and my dog was a puppy, she ate an entire bag of chocolate bars right before Halloween… She also once ate a pack of chewing gum and proceeded to get all of it stuck in her fur… Brilliant…

Lydia (The Perfect Pantry) March 9, 2008 um 9:09 pm

Awwwww, who could be mad at such a cute dog?!

Obsessive Foodie or Food Addict….You Decide March 9, 2008 um 9:45 pm

We have a brown tabby persian named Mr. Fozzberry Pie but he eats the tops off of blueberry and jalapeno cheese muffins so now we call him The Muffin Man.

LOL Oh, I love that he washes his face. How cute! 🙂

My parents used to have a dalmation named Shiloh. From the stories I’ve heard (I was just a baby), Shiloh ate grapes (spitting out the seeds after), a stick of butter, spaghetti, bananas (minus the peel; he’d stomp on it to make it fly), half a beer can, and a hole through the basement door. He might have been part goat. 😉

i was cracking up when i read this b/c this happened to me today! well, i was able to snap my photos first… but i was full and could not finish my entire plate of blueberry pancakes. then the phone rang so i went to get it. when i got off the phone and came back into the living room, i noticed that my plate was empty…there was some smearing of syrup on the coffee table…and some blueberry stains on the carpet! i was SO mad! our sweet dog NEVER does anything like that…but hubby checked, and she had maple syrup breath! BUSTED!

so imagine my amusement when i opened my google reader and saw this post! 🙂

This is my favorite post!!

Shandy March 10, 2008 um 12:37 am

Are you still breathing? I would be in absolute shock! All that work and not even a taste! Good thing your doggy is adorable looking. . .

BetterCell March 10, 2008 um 1:42 am

What about all that sugar content that he is ingesting.
Dogs too(and cats) develop Type 2 Diabetes…….which can be prevented,

Helene March 10, 2008 um 2:30 am

BetterCell: although I appreciate your concern I think you missed the point of the post: this hapenned maybe a total of 3-4 times over the last 10 years. He is ok, it’s not like I feed him a pan of cinnamon buns for breakfast everyday.

Carrie March 10, 2008 um 3:05 am

I feel like I can sympathize, but my little, cute, thief is my youngest son. The funny part is that from birth his nick name has been pup-pup. Go figure. Sorry for the rolls, but your baby is beautiful!

I came back in from the mail box after setting a layer of cake (yes, for a wedding) out to cool on the counter & found a single long skinny bite out of the side, just the size of a great dane mouth. I must have just come in right after she did it because she was nowhere to be found for a while. Good thing it wasn’t to the decorating stage yet, huh? Your dog is beautiful though! I can’t believe he washes his face! too sweet (and not in the diabetes kind of way 😉 )

Look at the eyes! He’s evil!

Pure evil!

Anonymous March 10, 2008 um 12:38 pm

What a gorgeous pooch! Funny how they can get into anything and everything. One of my dogs does what we call cat cleaning… actually licks his paws and runs it over his head.

Cheryl March 10, 2008 um 1:56 pm

First of all Tippy is just gorgeous. I love collies. But he does sound like he has a bit of a sweet tooth problem. So cute.

Actually the current piece of cake that is on my blog was thrown away shortly after the picture was taken as my one cat decided to lick the frosting when mommy had her back turned.

Anonymous March 10, 2008 um 4:10 pm

oh my god, Tippy and Aunt Marce are going to have a fabulous time together, especially if he does the face-cleaning trick, it´d have me laughing hysterically for hours!
As for my own war stories, I remember two off the top of my head:
The dog we had when I was a child, Perrín, once ate half a pastafrola (quice paste pie) when my mom left it on a table to cool while she picked up my brother from soccer practice. What made the situation even worse was that the dough had been lovingly made with amazing orange-yolk eggs fresh from a farm.
And then Maia once stole a whole loaf of homemade bread from the counter and we caught her when she was trying to escape to the backyard… and of course she put on her best "I´m invisible" face!
The weird thing is that now I can´t remember any stories of Phoebe stealing food, I guess she´s just a saint… yeah, right!

FSK March 10, 2008 um 4:52 pm

oh HAHA.. dang. i’ve had this happen many a times. You turn your head and your whole, long awaited meal is GONE! My dog likes to rub her face on the sides of the couch when she is done eating… ewwwww…

jasmine March 11, 2008 um 3:51 am

What? That sweet little thing?

Yeah…Sounds familiar…I knew a cat who recognized Haagen Dazs coffee ice cream containers (stuck her nose up at the other flavours) and made it very clear that the container’s contents were HERS.

Beanie has developed a very bad habit of pulling porkchop bones off your plate when you aren’t looking…I blame Gramma for teaching him that…

One of my parents' dogs used to do the "stand on the table and eat what’s available" trick all the time, but my most memorable pet/food moment was when my sister had gotten a kitten. The cat, Missy, was about 3 months old at the time, and this was the first time she got to smell shrimps. Needless to say, she was impressed.

I was standing by the sink, peeling shrimps, and desperately flailing my legs to keep the cat from simply climbing up my legs. With a hurt look, the cat turned and took a couple of steps towards the door…

… only to do a 180 degree twirl on one paw, jump onto a chair, and, well in excess of light speed, run across the kitchen counter, snatch the shrimp from my fingers, bounce on the wall, and disappear from the kitchen. I was left standing with my empty hand and my slack jaw.

My Lab mix has a horrible sweet tooth and sneaks around to get his fix. How cute and now I know I am not alone.

Jen Yu March 12, 2008 um 4:07 pm

Oh, would you just look at that sweet, furry face?!? I LOVE your pup! So cute and "innocent" looking. If I didn’t know any better I would have said, "I can’t believe he ate them all!" but since I know what dogs are capable of – and honestly, how could anyone canine or human resist your baking? – I’m not surprised that your baking met its untimely demise. Still, such a cutie 🙂

My pup is unbelievably simple-minded and for that I am grateful. She actually leaves food alone if you tell her to. We have left food on the coffee table – left the house for hours – only to come back and see nose prints on the table around the plate, but the food untouched. She’s very good indoors. She’s incredibly bad and insane outdoors 🙂

Jessy and her dog Winnie March 13, 2008 um 1:14 am

My two German shepherds manage to eat everything and anything that they can get their paws on when my back is turned. They riped open the garbage and ate the remnants of our thanksgiving turkey. One of them at a stick of butter. Not pretty.

Mallow March 14, 2008 um 1:14 am

Argh – such a cute pup! When I was growing up, my tiny cat once dragged a Thanksgiving turkey (much bigger than the cat) off the kitchen counter…

Anonymous May 3, 2008 um 4:00 pm

Awww, such a cutie! Sounds like my little baby, Jessy. One time, while my mom was napping and left some raw steaks on the counter Jessy snatched all of them! It was not pretty, its so hard to stat mad at them! Ha!

Dogs….you just gotta love ’em. I have a million stories for my lab/rott mix, Dylan. This past Christmas, he managed to devour two 1-pound loaves of chocolate cherry bread. Not only was their cocoa, but there was baking chocolate, chopped chocolate and strong coffee in that bread! I couldn’t believe it. But he survived. Had a rough couple of days, but he lived to counter surf again!
